It's happenin'!
This
summer, Area 13 high school students with disabilities will
have an opportunity to attend a program that will focus on
self-determination and leadership skills. P.H.A.T. (Pretty Hot and
Terrific) Happenings for Sophomores and
Juniors
will be held at Iowa Western Community College in Council
Bluffs on June 26-29, 2005.
The program, sponsored by the Loess Hills AEA and the Area
13 Transition Advisory Committee, will be open to 20
students and 5 teachers/counselors.
The program is
open to any Area 13 student with a disability who will be a
a sophomore or junior next school year. Students would be
interested in learning more about themselves and their goals
for the future; be involved or want to be more involved in
activities at school or community; like to work with other
people.
Students and
families are responsible for transportation to IWCC and a
$25 registration fee. Scholarships
may be available based on financial need and
availability of funds. AEA 13 will provide lodging at IWCC, food,
accommodations for students, teachers, counselors, and
transportation to evening off-campus activities. Activities
on-site will include speaker David Williamson, workshops,

During the
three days, students will:
- learn about themselves as a person and learner
- hear from others with similar barriers and share
successes
- learn to set goals for their future
- learn how to talk to others about their disability
- have FUN!
Goals for the
student include:
- learn decision-making, problem solving and goal setting
skills
- understand their disability and their needs to better self
advocate
- have supportive environment in which to practice
self-determination
Goals for the
teachers/counselors:
- learn activities to help students and plan to mentor up to
three students next year
