Assessment
Speech-Language Pathologists use a variety of assessment tools including observation, parent and teacher interview, building norms, assessment probes, analysis of language samples and a variety of formal evaluation tests and instruments.  Below are brief summaries of some of the formal instruments that may be utilized during an assessment of a student's communication skills.

 
Assessing Semantic Skills Through Everyday Themes (ASSET)

Assessment for Preschool and elementary grades, ages 3-0 through 9-11
Test of Vocabulary and Semantics
Assesses receptive and expressive vocabulary at the word and expanded levels.  Measures ability to demonstrate flexibility with language.  Scores are reported by Standard Score, Percentile Rank and Age Equivalency.
Bracken Basic Concept Scale
Charles E. Merrill (1984)
Assessment for Preschool and primary grades, ages 2-6 through 7-11
Assesses vocabulary; assesses knowledge of 330 basic concepts and conceptual categories that are fundamental skills for school readiness, classroom instruction and following directions. Scores are reported by Standard Score, Percentile Rank and Age Equivalency.
Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals-Preschool (CELF-PS)
The Psychological Corporation (1992)
Assessment for preschool and primary grades, ages 3-0 through 6-11
Assesses receptive and expressive language; assesses language ability in the areas of language form and content.  Measures semantics, syntax, morphology and auditory memory.  Scores are reported by Standard Score, Percentile Rank and Age Equivalency.
Expressive One Word Picture Vocabulary Test-R (EOWPVT-R)

The EOWPVT-R is a standardized assessment that uses black and white drawings to represent the stimulus cues and provide quick and valid information on a child's expressive vocabulary.  The test is designed to assess children from ages 2 through 12.  Scores are reported by Standard Score, Percentile Rank and Age Equivalency. 
The Expressive Vocabulary Test (EVT)
by Kathleen T. Williams (1997)
The assessment provides a single word response vocabulary of labels and synonyms.  It consists of 190 items and 4 examples.  Items 1-38 are labeling items which are given as nouns, verbs and adjectives.  The remaining 152 items are provided to elicit synonyms.  The presented items are colored illustrations.  Scores are reported by Standard Score, Percentile Rank and Age Equivalency.
Language Processing Test-R
LinguaSystems (1995)
Assesses primary and intermediate grades, ages 5-0 through 11-11
Assessment of language processing; assesses language comprehension, processing and expression to determine ability to organize information and assign meaning to what is heard.  Uses a hierarchy of tasks progressing from simple to complex processing.  Scores are reported by Standard Score, Percentile Rank and Age Equivalency.
The Listening Test
LinguaSystems (1992)
Assessment for primary and intermediate grades, ages 6-0 through 11-11
Assesses contextual listening skills; assesses strengths and weaknesses in the specific listening skill areas related to classroom listening situations.  Measures listening behaviors in the areas of main idea, details, concepts, reasoning and story comprehension.  Scores are reported by Standard Score, Percentile Rank and Age Equivalency.
The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT-III)
by Lloyd M. Dunn and Leota M. Dunn (1997)
The PPVT is a single word receptive vocabulary test available in two parallel forms, III A and III B.  The stimulus items are presented in an array of four black and white illustrations on a page.  The examiner verbalizes the stimulus and the respondent is to select the best representation of the stimulus.  The pictures are arranged in order of increasing difficulty.  The test is designed for ages 2 1/2 through 90+.  Scores are reported by Standard Score, Percentile Rank and Age Equivalency.
Preschool Language Assessment Instrument (PLAI)

Assesses preschool and kindergarten, ages 3-0 through 6-0
Assessment of receptive and expressive language; assesses the ability to handle the language demands of a classroom as they increase in abstraction.  Measures skill in mastery of discourse used to follow directions, reflect on information and solve problems. 
Structured Photographic Expressive Language Test (SPELT-II)
Janelle Publications, Inc. (1983)
Designed to assess the 4-0 to 8-11 year old child in four specific areas:  1. to distinguish those children who perform significantly below others of their age in the production of grammatical structures,  2.  to  assess specific strengths and weaknesses in the production of specific sentence structures,  3.  to provide planning and monitoring of remedial programs and  4.  to evaluate the responses of speakers of Black English.  Fifty full color photographs are used to prompt responses and a plus or minus is given for each item.  The total score is then compared to a mean score for age.
Structured Photographic Expressive Language Test - Preschool  (SPELT-PS)
Janelle Publications, Inc.
A screening instrument for children ages 3-0 through 4-11.  Purpose of the instrument is to identify children who may have difficulty with verbal expression in sentences.  It does not diagnose language delay, but will indicate the need for a more comprehensive diagnosis.  Twenty-five structured auditory and visual stimuli items are presented (full color photographs) and children respond in sentences to complete the examiner's sentences.  A plus or minus is given for each response and then compared to a mean score for age.
Test of Auditory Comprehension of Language-R (TACL-R)
DLM Teaching Resources
Assesses preschool and intermediate grades, ages 3-0 through 9-11
Designed to assess grammatical language comprehension; assesses the ability to process what is heard and form an association between its form and meaning.  The test measures specific areas of word meaning, word relations, grammar and sentence construction that are necessary to understand language used in the classroom.  Scores are reported by Standard Score, Percentile Rank and Age Equivalency.
Test of Problem Solving
LinguaSystems (1984)
Assesses primary and intermediate grades, ages 6-0 through 11-11
An assessment of language processing and expression; assesses critical thinking skills and the ability to verbalize reasons, solutions and justifications in similar situations that would be encountered in the curriculum.  Scores are reported by Standard Score, Percentile Rank and Age Equivalency.
The Word Test-R (Elementary)
LinguaSystems (1990)
Assesses primary and intermediate grades, ages 7-0 through 11-11
An assessment of vocabulary and semantics; assesses semantic organization and expansion beyond the word level.  Measures the ability to recognize and express the critical attributes of words that is required to demonstrate word meaning and language.  Scores are reported by Standard Score, Percentile Rank and Age Equivalency.
Test of Adolescent Language, Third Edition (TOAL-3)
Pro-Ed
The TOAL-3 is intended for individuals between the ages of 12-0 and 24-11. This test utilizes 8 subsets to measure language skills in the area of speaking, listening, vocabulary, grammar, reading, and writing.  Scores are reported by Standard Score and  Percentile Rank.
