Reading Terminology
(Buzz Words and Acronyms commonly used in educational conversations)

No Child Left Behind (NCLB)- a federal mandate; to ensure all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach at a minimum, proficiency on challenging academic achievement standards and academic assessments.

Comprehensive Reading Program- a high quality reading program that is based on scientifically based reading research (SBRR). Must include instructional content based on the five essential components of reading instruction (phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension and fluency) integrated into a coherent design.

Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)- a tool used to identify a state's progress toward reaching the goals set by NCLB.

Reading First- a national effort to support states to make EVERY child a proficient reader. This effort impacts all Iowa schools through statewide accountability.

What Works- research based instructional strategies that have a profound impact on student learning. The research on these strategies is compiled by Robert Marzano et.al.

Guided Reading- a teacher works with a small group of students who have similiar reading processes. The teacher selects and introduces new books and supports students reading the whole text to themselves, making teaching points during and after the reading.

6 Traits Writing- Traits that good writing posseses. Ideas/Content, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Conventions, and Presentation.

Every Child Reads- an Iowa reading initiative to: build a learning community engaged in studying literacy and promoting growth in literacy, and to improve student achievement.

Traits of the Effective Reader-Traits that good readers know and are able to do. Conventions, Comprehension, Context, Interpretations, Synthesis, and Evaluation.
