DEVELOPING AN ELL PLAN

Description: This is a one day workshop designed to help district decision makers in developing a Lau Plan (ELL Plan) which will comply with all the federal [Office for Civil Rights (OCR), No Child Left Behind (NCLB)]

and state mandates. Participants will be given a working knowledge of the compliance regulations, as well as a template of a Lau (ELL) Plan that could be used for districts with low incidence ELL populations. The goal of the day is to leave with a workable Lau Plan for their district.

ELL ASSESSMENTS TRAINING

Participants: Personnel responsible for ELL testing

Limit: 25 participants

 

 

Description: This is a one day workshop designed to help the personnel who are currently responsible for English Language Proficiency evaluations or for those who are seeking first time training. Training will include the IDEA Proficiency Test (IPT) currently used at AEA 13 as initial placement testing of new ELL students and the new spring testing instrument being recommended by the state of Iowa for all ELL students. Goal of the day will be to enable the participants to administer these Proficiency evaluations in their district.

Language Assessment Committee (ELL Support) Training

Participants: Personnel involved with ELL student support/serve on a

                     Language Assessment Committee (LAC)

Limit: 25 participants

 

 

Description: This is a one day workshop designed to help the personnel who serve on an ELL support committee in their building or district. The workshop will cover the responsibilities of a LAC (Language Assessment Committee) . The workshop will cover the topics of:

What is a LAC?

How does a LAC work?

What are the responsibilities of a LAC?

How can a LAC assist ELL students?

How does a LAC fit into my district’s Lau Plan?

          What resources are available to a LAC?

Goal of the day will be to help personnel to be better decision makers about ELL students and how best to serve their needs.

Creating a "Parents as Educational Partners" Program Training

Participants: Teachers , administrators and community members that are interested in developing a Parents as Educational Partners Program in their school or organization

Description: The Parents as Educational Partners (PEP) Curriculum was developmed and field-tested during a three year family English literacy Title VII project.  The (PEP) project increased parent involvement and improved English language skills of language minority parents within school communities.

The components of the program are: ESL/Bilingual classes for parents, Parent/Child Activities, Parenting Workshops, Inservices on Parent Involvement for District School Teachers.

Participants in this workshop will receive the complete PEP curriculum manual
